Abstract

The Energy System Information Model (ESIM) is a domain-specific RDF graph decribes information about energy systems at building and urban / grid levels, including their automation and control systems. It provides a functional, structural and physical description of the systems into a metadata structure and allow for linking additional operational data.

The energy system information model (ESIM) is a domain-specific model that is represented as an RDF graph and that describes energy systems at building level as well as at urban level, including their automation and control equipment. It has been initially developed in the scope of an EU project called eeEmbedded, and has been since further complemented and maintained at Fraunhofer IIS/EAS. It provides a data structure that enables a functional, structural and physical description of entire energy systems. The core superclasses and property groups of ESIM are based on a conceptual decomposition of the energy flow inside energy systems. More specifically, ESIM follows a decomposition of energy systems into subsystems and components which can serve either as (1) energy sources, (2) energy transformation, (3) energy distribution, (4) energy storing, (5) automation and control, as well as (6) energy consumption or (7) energy related information. It can be noticed that this conceptual decomposition of energy systems into core energy roles in energy flows is almost systematic in the energy domain, and reflects the system modeling hierarchies found in e.g. energy balance analysis, energy simulation, HVAC design or even smart grids systems. Among the several entities descending from these core concepts, a distinction is made between entities for physical, informational, functional and business-related purposes. More than the description of complex systems, ESIM has been also developed for enabling integration of further system-related information.

ESIM: Description back to ToC

The ESIM core parts represent data which are needed to describe an energy system as a whole with its main structure, function and behavior. The core parts are initially intented to be used as a basis for building blocks to speed-up the energy system design process with the help of templates. A systematization of energy systems, subsystems and components could be based on physical, informational, functional and business-related purposes.
